- I'm Director of Communications for Rolling Fire Enterprises, which operates LocalCrop.com, Crop Bistro & Bar, and Rolling Fire Foods.
Localcrop.com is an online farmers market launched in July 2008 by Steve Schimoler, chef-owner of Crop Bistro, in the Warehouse District, linking local restaurants and institutions (including schools, hospitals and universities) with farmers, growers and producers from within a 150-mile radius of Cleveland. The Ohio Department of Agriculture is our market partner, as well as Sysco Cleveland, which provides safe, dependable delivery in their refrigerated trucks, over already established routes, thereby conserving fuel and reducing the system's carbon footprint.
- What gifts can you give to Cleveland's local food community?
- Localcrop provides an online marketplace for local farm products. We are always looking for new suppliers. Growers interested in learning how they can become Localcrop suppliers are welcome to contact me.
- What about local food makes you most excited?
- As most thoughtful observers have noted, the day is quickly approaching when locally grown food will no longer be a luxury for the elite, but -- thanks to soaring food costs and safety issues -- will be a necessity for the entire community. I'm not only thrilled to be a part of meeting that challenge, but I also am gratified to see how the move toward eating local is reviving small, sustainable agriculture as a viable part of the Ohio economy. (Plus, it tastes pretty wonderful, too!)
