Tell us about yourself:
We help adults with developmental disabilities to become successfully employed. CleveLand Crops is an agriculture training and employment program of CCBDD and its non-profit affiliate SAW, Inc.. As a new employment and training venture, in 2010 we developed our first urban farm on the 1.1 acre site of the old Stanard School at E.53rd and Stanard in the St.Clair Superior neighborhood. In 2011 Cleveland Crops became one of five growers at the Ohio City Farm, and we installed the Free Stamp Garden in Willard Park next to Cleveland's City Hall. We also established the 1 acre Heritage Farm at E105th and Ashbury in 2011. In 2012 we are developing the Agriculture Education Center at Stanard Farm, and will expand from our 1.1. acre farm to a 2.5 acre campus that will include greeenhouses, hoop houses, a processing facility and will partner with OSU Extension Cuyahoga County as they re-locate their county offices, with classroom space to Stanard. In 2012 we will also develop Spring Hill Farm on 1.5 acres in Seven Hills, Olmsted Township Farm on 6 acres in Olmsted Township, our .5 acre South Euclid Farm, with other development plans in the works. Over the next 3 years, we plan to develop up to ten one+ acres sites throughtout the county to employ up to 100 adults with developmental disabilities. We strive to grow crops and employ our workers year round through the use of greenhouses, hoop houses and other season extension techniques. Stop by for a vist when you see us at work, or visit us on Faceboook at Cleveland Crops.
What gifts can you give to Cleveland's local food community?
We are very open to collaborating and cooperating with other businesses and local food organizations.
What knowledge and practices do you want to learn?
We want to develop a sustainable social enterprise that can employ 100 adults with developmental disabilities year round, and strive to grow and sell fresh produce and develop value-added products to achieve that goal.
What about local food makes you most excited?
The local food movement can help transform the city of Cleveland one farm at a time. We plan to develop up to 10 farm sites throughout the county over the next five years, and hope to employ about 100 adults with developmental disabilities in this business.

Cleveland School Gardens publication by Arcadia Publishing

Arcadia Publishing just put out a new "Images of America" title called Cleveland School Gardens by Joel Mader that is a real "back to the future" photo history of the Cleveland Public Schools. It is amazing that the Cleveland School District was a national leader integrating horticulture into the school curriculum. Very inspiring to know that this was/is possible..

CCBDD's Stanard Farm adopts a new business name ... though Stanard Farm will always be Stanard Farm

Say goodbye forever to the chubby profile of me (Rich Hoban) standing in a farm field out in Bucyrus, Ohio. As CCBDD's Stanard Farm is beginning to participate in some farmer's markets and as we are actively working to acquire and develop additional farm sites in different parts of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County to employ adults with developmental disabilities, we realized that we needed to come up with a name for our farm business that is not identified with only one location. Stanard Farm…

Hi Rich,
Things are going very well here! Were starting to expand alongside CrownPoint and getting ready to plan for next year. Still exploring new outlet opportunities but hope to be nearly self sustaining w/ the Hattie's Cafes over the next summer/fall. As we grow here we will need to set up a good distribution system as well as packaging/storage. Id be interested to hear your thoughts on these issues. Thanks for your support,

Nate

Good Morning Rich,

Yes, one of my sisters (Margaret), did relay the contact to me, in as much as I have most all of the family history.  Captain Ben and his brother's had the first schooner lines on the Great Lakes and did a lot of the hauling for the fur traders (principally John Jacob Astor.  They had a warehouse on Mackinac Island.  They also charted a great deal of the Lakes and had Stanard Lighthouse upon Stanard Rock in Lake Superior.  Captain Benjamin was one of the original founders of the Cleveland Public Library and a member of the Arkites.  A brother was instrumental in creating the Holden Arboreteum.  Yes I was in the MBA program('88) at Carroll and also did my undergraduate work)'72) there.  I retired in 1999 and have been living in Florida ever since, first in Key West and for the past eight years in Marco Island.  All I do now is golf and play softball.   I'm at recess for the rest of my life.  My daughters did send me a cutting board made from wood from the old school and I used to park there when I used to eat at either the Hofbrau House or Sterle's.  I hope for the success of the program and expansion of other farms in the Cleveland area.  Thanks, Danny Stanard
