Rich Hoban of Stanard Farm is attending Jenita McGowan's eventCCBDD's CleveLand Crops/Stanard Farm is looking for two full-time, year-round Farm Operations Supervisors to support our growing agriculture training and employment program for adults with developmental disabilities. We opened Stanard Farm in 2010, and we are planning to establish one or more new urban farms in 2011; employing up to 25 newly trained farmers with developmental disabilities by year's end. Arcadia Publishing just put out a new "Images of America" title called Cleveland School Gardens by Joel Mader that is a real "back to the future" photo history of the Cleveland Public Schools. It is amazing that the Cleveland School District was a national leader integrating horticulture into the school curriculum. Very inspiring to know that this was/is possible..

Say goodbye forever to the chubby profile of me (Rich Hoban) standing in a farm field out in Bucyrus, Ohio. As CCBDD's Stanard Farm is beginning to participate in some farmer's markets and as we are actively working to acquire and develop additional farm sites in different parts of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County to employ adults with developmental disabilities, we realized that we needed to come up with a name for our farm business that is not identified with only one location. Stanard Farm…

Check out the latest issue of Time Magazine. Will Allen of Milwaukee's Growing Power, Inc. was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Nice to see urban agriculture in the spotlight!

Todd Alexander said… Good Morning Rich,
Yes, one of my sisters (Margaret), did relay the contact to me, in as much as I have most all of the family history. Captain Ben and his brother's had the first schooner lines on the Great Lakes and did a lot of the hauling for the fur traders (principally John Jacob Astor. They had a warehouse on Mackinac Island. They also charted a great deal of the Lakes and had Stanard Lighthouse upon Stanard Rock in Lake Superior. Captain Benjamin was one of the original founders of the Cleveland Public Library and a member of the Arkites. A brother was instrumental in creating the Holden Arboreteum. Yes I was in the MBA program('88) at Carroll and also did my undergraduate work)'72) there. I retired in 1999 and have been living in Florida ever since, first in Key West and for the past eight years in Marco Island. All I do now is golf and play softball. I'm at recess for the rest of my life. My daughters did send me a cutting board made from wood from the old school and I used to park there when I used to eat at either the Hofbrau House or Sterle's. I hope for the success of the program and expansion of other farms in the Cleveland area. Thanks, Danny Stanard
